Arabian Nights & Middle Eastern Delights

I love Middle Eastern food. I love the freshness and spiciness of it and there are a lot of great vegetarian options available too.

My favourite place to go is the oregano bakery located south of Sydney at 56 Connels Point Road, South Hurstville.

This place has a licence to print money, its always busy, the service is warm the food is great and they have a fine selection of Lebanese sweets if thats what you like.  Personally, I am more of a savoury person and I just love zataar which is a similar to a pizza with dried ingredients of oregano, thyme and other herbs. It's divine with some fresh lemon squeezed onto it. Simple food at its best.

Hummus is another one of my favourite middle eastern foods.  I have searched high and low for an authentic hummus and I have learned that you won't find one in a supermarket.  You will need to either make it yourself (so easy) or buy it at a lebanese restaurant. Made simply with chickpeas, olive oil, salt and lemon juice in a food processor until it is completely blends together to form a smooth consistency. I use canned chickpeas, but I guess you could soak yours overnight.  This dip goes perfectly with carrot sticks but I like it with some freshly toasted Turkish bread.

If you have a sweet tooth one of my all time favourite desserts is Pistachio Ice-cream with rose water. Words cannot explain how moorish this is. You may be able to find these at some speciality stores but if you can find a good middle eastern sweet shop you are bound to find it.  Sometimes you will find it at your favourite gelato bar. Keep an eye out for it.

Thanks for listening folks, and stay tuned. Next week I will show you how to hold your own mexican themed dinner party. Until then keep eating.
